History of UH St. John, a Catholic Hospital

Opening its doors in 1981, UH St. John Medical Center was the result of a merger between two long standing health care institutions: St. John Hospital in Cleveland and Bay View Osteopathic General Hospital in Bay Village. The medical center, which had been co-owned by University Hospitals and the Sisters of Charity Health System since 1999, is a provider of Catholic health care. Sole ownership of UH St. John Medical Center officially transferred to the UH health system in November 2015.

Throughout its history, UH St. John Medical Center has remained committed to its faith-based mission and provision of excellence in patient care.

Today, UH St. John Medical Center is one of the largest employers in the City of Westlake with more than 1,200 employees, including more than 500 medical staff. UH St. John Medical Center is a teaching hospital and maintains an affiliation with the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Also, our Westlake medical center is affiliated with Westshore Primary Care, Inc., a consortium of more than 50 physicians who range in specialties from family practice to obstetrics.
