POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and reporting to the Director of Nursing (DON), the Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) is responsible for working side-by-side with the DON for the planning, organizing, directing and financial management of Nursing Services at Charles Drew Health Centers. The ADON will be an active participant in the coordination and facilitation of Joint Commission committee activities and ongoing accreditation process, as well as maintenance of the organization’s status as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). The ADON will provide leadership in the development of Infection Control and Prevention annual goals, objectives and evaluation, in collaboration with the infection control committee, which will entail continuously and systematically surveilling the environment of care for areas of risk and monitoring the completion of any necessary follow-up activity. Requires the independent application of an extensive level of experienced judgment and skills. Interprets and supports the purposes, philosophy and objectives of Charles Drew Health Center. Provides input for performance evaluations and has the responsibility to identify and report situations in which corrective action is needed and the authority to administer needed corrective action in the absence of the DON, for all nursing staff. Eighty to ninety percent of time is spent in management activities with minimal amount of time spent in direct patient care. Working collaboratively with the DON to identify and resolve departmental deficiencies, ensure staff adherence to departmental, facility, Joint Commission, OSHA and State/Federal standards and guidelines. Assist with the maintenance and promotion of patient health across the life cycle. Works collaboratively with other health/social agencies to provide continuity of care. Assist the DON in developing and conducting educational programs and teaching opportunities for staff, either formally or informally. Assist with the orientation of new clinical and support staff. Attend trainings to obtain and maintain certifications required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as an expert nursing resource person for the CDHC Medical/Clinic department, in regards to infection control and prevention, as well as, compliance with Joint Commission standards.
- Maintains expertise in infection control and prevention; assesses all reported incidents individually and collectively for trends; monitors the completion of any necessary follow-up activity.
- Work in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources and Clinic Directors to monitor employee health records and vaccinations.
- Execute new hire and all staff training content related to infection control and risk management; and keeps it up-to-date.
- Delivery of appropriate disease control activities as defined by the Joint Commission standard of care guidelines and applicable state and federal rules, regulations, and policies.
- Coordinate the facilitation of the Infection Control Committees. Monitor, investigate, educate and respond to accounted, suspected and confirmed cases of communicable disease cases for Charles Drew Health Center. Document communicable diseases through utilization of the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS). Ensure reporting of communicable disease to the Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) is accurate and completed in a timely. Interview, educate, and counsel patients/ clients diagnosed with or exposed to communicable diseases.
- Implement current disease control measures during local outbreaks.
- Participate in activities of Omaha Metropolitan Medial Responds System (OMMRS)
- Plan, and develop strategies for controlling loss and risk exposure for CDHC.
- Assist with the reviews and updates of all infection control and prevention policies and procedures regularly to assure consistency with the law and practice standards.
- Promote positive employee relations, strong customer service and commitment to ongoing staff education and training, for new and current employees.
- Assist Director of Facilities with rounds at main and Satellite clinics to direct and monitor the work of employees, in regards to adherence to infection control and prevention standards and compliance with Joint Commission Standards, ensuring services are delivered to patients consistent with the vision and standards of the employer.
- Assists with Continuous Quality Improvement and corrective follow-up actions.
- Maintains effective communication with patients, families, employees and outside agencies.
- Supervise and complete employee performance reviews for Medical Assisants.
- Active participation in designated clinical meetings
- Anticipates potential problem situations and intervenes to offset any adverse impact. Analyzes and reports specific emerging problems to the DON and or Chief Medical Officer.
- Assist DON with collection of statistical data and preparation of comprehensive reports regarding health services or program activities.
- Reviews periodic reports with DON to determine status in meeting program/service goals.
- Collaborates with DON to identify methods to improve performance and motivate employees.
- Works with DON in the development and administration of departmental budgets
- Professionally represent Charles Drew Health Center within the community.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and application of key Clinical Quality Indicators and proactively monitors and implements systems to achieve or surpass organization’s goals.
- Assist with Triage of patients walking in or calling in to the clinic wanting to be seen.
- Responsible for coverage of the clinic in the absence of the DON, ensuring continued delivery of compassionate quality care, providing nursing supervision and disciplinary action, if needed. Maintain adequate staff coverage, clinic supplies and ensuring general clinic cleanliness and positive patient outcomes.
- Coordinate and actively participate in CDHC outreach activities (health fairs, screenings, etc.)
- Assist in the clinic(s) as needed with direct patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the DON.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required, Masters preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse required.
- Completion of Principals of Epidemiology SS3030 and Applied Epidemiology course; or ability to complete within six months of hire date.
- High level of knowledge of scope of practice for the RN, LPN and MA.
- Demonstrated mastery of critical thinking, analytics, and problem solving skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at various levels both inside and outside of the organization, often in sensitive situations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office – particularly Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with an Electronic Practice Management (EPM) and/ or Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Proficiency with meeting facilitation and project management Language: English fluency (Spanish, Burmese, Mai Mai and Sudanese language fluency a plus)
- Hours of Work: 8:30 – 5:30 and/or 9:00 – 6:0
- Travel: Some travel required.
- Exposure: The exposure characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. For example, the employee may frequently be exposed to bloodborne and other hazardous chemicals. Additionally, the noise level in the work environment may occassionally be quite loud. In all cases personal protective equipment will be provided to the employee in combination with adequate ventilation and other engineering controls to minimize the risk of exposure or other hazardous occurrence.
