PURPOSE OF JOB:
To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of a Neurologist, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks allowing the Neurologist to extend his/her services. The NP/PA assists the doctor through the more effective use of this knowledge and decision-making, helping to establish diagnoses and to plan subsequent therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary to implement the therapeutic plan of hospitalization. A major role will be as a patient’s advocate in the medical care system serving as an advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Patient care – office- Meet with and treat new and established patients in the office. Perform initial and follow-up consultations. Assess patient health status. Discuss patient concerns and counsel patients about their care. Develop and initiate appropriate evaluations and care plans, including need for physician services, etc. Perform tests and assess patient needs for treatment plan modifications. Review patient records to determine health status. Document appropriate patient information and data. Respond to patient emergencies. Perform non-invasive procedures as required. Prescribe medications.
B. Patient care – hospital- Perform rounds on patients. Suggest admissions during the daytime hours. Write orders and discuss treatment plans with patients and their families. Perform initial and follow-up consultations. Check progress notes, lab and other test results. Respond to outside physician, PAC, CRNP and nurse requests.
C. Assists the physician and patient in the discharge planning process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education:
If PA: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science from an accredited institution required
2. Current Physician Assistant licensure in Pennsylvania
3. NCCPA certified
4. Prescriptive authority determined by supervising physician
5. CPR & ACLS
If NP: 1. Masters of Nursing degree from an accredited institution required
2. Current Pennsylvania licensure required:
- Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP)
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Prescriptive Authority
3. Board certified NP or board eligible NP
4. CPR & ACLS
