Position Responsibilities
The Nurse Practitioner works closely with the collaborating physician to coordinate a course of treatment for general surgical and bariatric surgical patients: perform histories, physical exams, order labs and interpret results to formulate a diagnosis or treatment plan. The Nurse Practitioner is a full-time employee and as such is expected to spend at an average of 40 hours per week performing the duties of this position.

- Aware of access to policies on PolicyTech, HRHQ (i.e., Administrative Manual, HR policies, etc.)
o Seeks information and clarity when unsure of policy prior to initiating procedure.
o Maintains current immunization and other Employee Health requirements.
o Adheres to the Substance Misuse policy. Reports any signs of impairment, suspicious behavior or diversion of drugs to supervisor promptly.
- Protects all written and electronic patient information from view.
o Shreds/"Shred It" all discarded patient related documents.
o Adheres to the Statement of Confidentiality and all requirements as outlined in the HIPAA policies and procedure.
- Ensures that all equipment is in proper working order and takes malfunctioning equipment out of service. Report malfunctions promptly.
- Maintains a safe, neat clutter free work environment.
o Assumes ownership of cleanliness and neatness of work area and throughout the organization
- Reports errors, environmental hazards and injuries to supervisor promptly
o Responds appropriately to fire drills, codes, etc.
o Can locate and reference Emergency/Disaster Preparedness policies and resources.

o Demonstrates ability to prevent, recognize and report infant/child abductions.

- Provides patient care consistent with Pennsylvania regulations and guidelines governing the licensure and prescriptive authority.
- Function to the full level of the Advanced Practice Clinician's license and within the scope of practice predicated by the certifying body.
- Notify supervising physician of any patient’s medical condition that falls outside scope of practice.
- Adhere to the terms of the supervising physician agreement and prescriptive authority in performance of duties, including the prescribing and dispensing of medications.
- Maintains all training and education to maintain licensure and certifications.
- Completes submits all documentation required to maintain licensure and certification.
- Articulates and promotes to other health care providers and public, the role of the Advanced Practitioner within the healthcare team.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provides general surgical and bariatric surgical services in the ambulatory and inpatient care settings at Mercy Fitzgerald.
- Consults with physician, as appropriate, based on information obtained from patient's history, physical exam, lab and testing results.
- Communicates with patient all results of testing and lab as per Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic Policy.
- Communicates directly, clearly and regularly with other physicians on clinical and patient management issues so as to facilitate good patient care and efficient operations of the practice.
- Treats all practice employees with respect and communicates with all practice employees in a professional manner.
- Demonstrates cultural competence in all interactions with patients, caregivers, and other members of the team.
- Provides care that is respectful and responsive to all cultural and linguistic needs.
- Always maintain HIPPA compliance.
- Completes documentation within 48 hours in accordance with network policy.
- Demonstrates accuracy in billing as evidenced by successful completion of annual billing and coding modules and internal compliance audits.
- Performs designated procedures independently.
o Conducts patient evaluation and examinations during office visits including medical histories, assessing risks for surgery, and preparing patients to see the physician.
o Suture removal.
o Drainage of abscess and assist in office procedures.
o Wound care
- Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities!
- Ensures continuity of care for all patients admitted on the hospital service and in the outpatient setting.
- Provides support and education to patients and their families by explaining procedures, answering the questions, follow up with them post-operatively and otherwise helping them navigate the system to assure the best outcome.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Utilize quality assurance standards and programs: evaluate client care through use of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
- Informs patient about health status, treatments, and prognosis through teaching and counseling.
- Submit all required billing documentation daily and shall include all information required to bill for the services provided.
- Complete all chart documentation by the completion of the clinical session utilizing the electronic medical record application.
- Comply with all policies and procedures promulgated by the employed network management and included in the Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Comply with all quality measures from 3rd party payors and work to achieve compliance with agreed upon organizational targets and network performance.
- During office hours review all telephone messages from patients:
- Prescription refills
- Urgent patient problems
- Calls that require physician action
- Provides office manager with a list of all clinical supplies needed.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the practice.
- Share knowledge and expertise though staff meetings, in services and involvement in professional organizations.
- Displays a willingness to always work as a team.
- Maintains a productive relationship with other physician practices, departments and external contacts.
- Projects an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct.
- Provides ongoing clinical education to ensure they are correctly preparing patients for their visits and that they are correctly obtaining vital signs.
- Provides feedback to the collaborative physician and the office manager of any medical assistants having problems performing their clinical responsibilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner degree program.
- Active medical staff privileges at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in good standing
Completes all required CEUs.
