Position Overview:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
- Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field. Selects proper sterilization methods for instruments and equipment: sterilizes prior to procedure, and verifies instruments are sterile.
- Adheres to policies and procedures in aseptic techniques. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or break in aseptic technique is observed and reports information to the circulating nurse.
- Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins.
- Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.
- Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.
- Performs scrub assistance for all procedures.
- Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover.
- Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case.
- Accesses supplies in medication storage areas, including needles and syringes.
- Performs safety checks on equipment and troubleshoots equipment to ensure proper operation and good working conditions of equipment as needed.
- Performs proper collection of blood specimens using proper protocol and technique.
- Provides direct patient care utilizing the nursing process under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse.
- Performs other duties assigned; willingness to adapt to changing department demands.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical School of Nursing Program.
- Experience: One year of work experience in inpatient healthcare. Specialty surgical services may require specific training, experience, knowledge, and skills.
- Other Credentials: AHA BLS - Healthcare Provider,Licensed Practical Nurse
- Knowledge and Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Special Training: Completion of designated annual competencies.
