Overview
The Director of Nursing (DON) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the nursing department within a healthcare facility, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care. This leadership position requires a deep understanding of nursing practices, regulatory compliance, and effective management strategies. The DON will be responsible for developing care plans, supervising nursing staff, and maintaining adherence to HIPAA regulations while fostering a positive environment for both patients and staff.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive care plans tailored to meet the needs of residents in a nursing home setting.
- Supervise nursing staff, providing guidance and support to ensure optimal patient care delivery.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA and MDS (Minimum Data Set) standards.
- Manage daily operations of the nursing department, including staffing, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes and promote effective communication among healthcare providers.
- Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in accordance with facility policies and legal requirements.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities for nursing staff to enhance their skills and knowledge in nursing administration and patient care.
- Stay updated on advancements in medical terminology, physiology knowledge, and best practices in home health care.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Proven experience in a nursing leadership role within a nursing home or similar healthcare setting.
- Strong understanding of care plans, nursing administration, medical terminology, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA/MDS).
- Excellent supervisory skills with the ability to manage diverse teams effectively.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on patient-centered care.
- Ability to analyze complex situations and make informed decisions that prioritize patient safety and quality of care.
