JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for leading, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, analyzing and evaluating the nursing services of the department, as well as supervising members of the nursing team and others as assigned, in order to provide effective nursing services that meet practice and quality standards. Provides or delegates nursing and related services. The Director of Nursing may be asked to assume the charge responsibilities for the facility in the absence of the Administrator/Manager. This position may require additional hours of work on evenings and weekends outside of their normal schedule and be on-call for consultation when emergent issues arise in order to insure the safety and proper care of all residents.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
1. Provide administrative and clinical leadership for nursing staff to promote the delivery of quality care. Maintain knowledge base of current standards of nursing practice. Develop and revise nursing policies and procedures. Implements care as planned. Provide or delegates provision of health related services.
2. Support and facilitate whole person, resident/client directed care and services. Work to align training and services to Benedictine Standards and protocols.
3. Develop, revise, monitor and implement the department budget to promote appropriate utilization of resources. Oversee and adjust the staffing hours based on acuity, census, and established staffing patterns. Negotiate with third party payers for appropriate service plans.
4. Direct the hiring evaluation, counseling, and termination of nursing department employees, including coaching staff that are participating in a succession development plan and adhering to affirmative action requirements.
5. Ensure that a clinical staff development program is in place to meet regulatory clinical and staff needs.
6. Foster a culture of quality assurance performance improvement (QAPI). Develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing department quality assurance program. This includes resident/client, family and staff satisfaction; safety and risk management; clinical quality measures and strategic planning.
7. Develop and maintain policies and procedures to promote compliance with all regulations and nursing standards. Stay current with upcoming regulatory changes.
8. Partner with other departments, and residents/families. Serve as a liaison with Benedictine, community groups, third party payers, vendors, general public, and other health care providers. Notify facility or corporate medical director when indicated.
9. Attend Benedictine director of nursing events.
10. Lead the clinical department(s) utilizing the components of Relationship Based Care.
11. Promote the Benedictine Mission and Core Values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect and Justice by bringing the Mission and Core Values into the day-to-day activities of the company.
12. Perform other duties, tasks and/or projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse, which must be in good standing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Two (2) years of RN experience with at least one (1) year in long term care, home care, or related area
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
- Nursing management experience; ADON or Clinical Manager preferred for Skilled Nursing Facility
- Participation in professional organizations
